Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross earns IIHS Top Safety Pick

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is premier road safety and auto safety organization that provides crash testing and safety testing ratings and certifications to all newly-launched cars in the United States.

The IIHS compiles an annual list of models that have met the highest-quality safety specifications. Ratings start from Poor and end at Good. To get the IIHS award, cars must get very high ratings in most (if not all) of their crash and safety tests.

This year saw the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross get the coveted 2019 IIHS Top Safety Pick Award.

A Car That Champions Performance And Safety

To get the 2019 IIHS Top Safety Pick Award, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross had to achieve significantly high ratings on various tests, such as front and side crash prevention, front overlap, side overlap, roof strength, body restraints, and headlight strength & clarity tests. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross earned the highest IIHS rating – Good – in all six of the crash testing categories for most trim levels.

The higher trims and specifically the sporty Touring Package received very good reviews for its advanced safety features like the automatic high & low beam and automatic braking.

The crash avoidance technology that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross proudly boasts was termed to be the most superior of all safety features in the car. However, the IIHS did reduce a few points from the feature’s ratings, purely because the crash avoidance technology is available only in the expensive Touring Package.

Why Mitsubishi Lost Out on the Top Safety Pick+ Award?

The Top Safety Pick+ Award is the highest award given by the IIHS, higher than the Top Safety Pick Award.

Despite the superior ratings of most of its safety features, the LED headlights of the SE variant and the halogen lamps of the base variant received sub-par ratings by the IIHS. While they are still good compared to other brands in the same segment, the headlights and lamps failed to meet the IIHS’s strict standards.

Yet, this is still not a bad outcome for Mitsubishi. The 2019 Award is the brand’s second IIHS Top Safety Pick Award, following the Outlander.
